What maintenance does a mini split need each season?

A ductless mini split needs simple owner cleaning each season plus a yearly professional tune-up to keep airflow, drainage, and efficiency on track. Most performance problems start with dust-clogged filters, dirty coils, or a blocked drain line. We routinely see in the Oak Ridge area that a little neglect leads to weak cooling and occasional water drips. If cleaning doesn’t restore normal output or you hear new noises, schedule service; repeated leaks or electrical issues point to repair rather than watch-and-wait.

Seasonal mini split care checklist:

  • During heavy use every 4–6 weeks: remove and wash indoor filters; let them dry fully before reinstalling.
  • Spring and summer: keep 2–3 feet clear around the outdoor unit and gently rinse the coil with low-pressure water.
  • Cooling season: confirm the condensate drain is flowing outside and flush or clean the line or pump if slow.
  • Fall and winter: test heat mode, keep snow/ice off the outdoor unit, and watch for abnormal defrost steam.

Always shut off power before cleaning and stop if you see ice, burning odors, or tripped breakers.
